The cold fog of the City hit him full in the face as he plunged onward through the darkness. The roar of music and a hundred human voices fell away. The glow of the Crystal Palace reached only a few meters into the gloom. He didn’t dare glance backward at the brilliant crush of bright young things of fashion, fluttering within the glass walls like butterflies in a conservatory. A gnat like himself had no place amongst them.

And yet, no matter how many steps he marched over the slippery cobblestones, he could not forget the touch of soft fingertips trailing through his hair. His scalp still tingled with the echoes of the sensation, its electricity not yet discharged, every now and again sending another shiver over his touch-starved skin.

Saturday Snippet, 9.9.23

Enzo spent the entire encounter yearning to kiss him.

From the moment of their unexpected reunion outside the opera house; to hearing his name for the first time, Fiore, and what a curious coincidence that was, and how delightfully it danced on Enzo’s tongue; to the suggestion of a bathhouse, to which Enzo could of course never acquiesce but nonetheless appreciated, the thought of Fiore’s bare skin glowing beneath the sheen of steam and sweat; to the intoxicating sensation of Fiore’s arm twined through his to lead him, ever so gently, to the coffeehouse; to watch that magnificent masculine gem pulse with every swallow of his slender swanlike throat, and how his shirt collar slid towards his shoulder as he gestured, revealing the delicate curve of his clavicle; and to discover through their conversation that they held more in common than mere lust—not that Enzo objected to satisfying lust, but for one who’d left all his friends behind at university, he had great appreciation for a deeper connexion.

And yet despite their growing bond, the bauta mask still stood between them.

The true beauty of the bauta’s design, in Enzo’s opinion, was its practicality. It hid the wearer’s identity from view altogether, while the broad beak allowed one to eat, drink, and speak freely. He’d worn it daily for almost a year now, ever since Lucrezia had withdrawn him from university, and found it perfectly comfortable. Reassuring, even, to know he’d not be judged by his appearance.

Today, however, he had discovered its singular flaw.

One might eat, drink, and speak beneath the bauta mask—but one could not kiss.

Enzo felt as if it would drive him mad.

Between university, foxhunting, steeplechasing, rowing, cricket, fencing, and the myriad social obligations of a prince, Lindsey had little time to even think of romantic pursuits.

Which meant that when the handsome stranger pressed him against the door, the resulting kiss was the first to ever touch Lindsey’s lips.

And it took his breath away.

“‘And in the throbbing engine-room leap the long rods of polished steel.’”

Aubrey’s heart stuttered in his chest. He hardly dared to flick his eyes toward the gentleman.

But the gentleman only smiled an all-too-charming bashful smile. “Forgive me—I was feeling poetical.”

Aubrey, who had never felt poetical in his life until this evening, managed a pale imitation of that smile in return.

The seclusion of the engine room served to heighten other aspects of Aubrey’s senses. He had not realized, in the midst of the party, that the gentleman had a scent. A slight masculine musk, along with the warmth of his body, standing so close to Aubrey as he did now, bypassed his brain to speak straight to his baser instincts. This warmth was rivaled only by the warmth of the gentleman’s voice and expression, which did still more curious things to Aubrey’s heart. The atrophied organ fluttered against his ribcage disconcertingly. The thought of curling around the warmth sent a hungry shudder over his skin. It’d been so long since he’d felt more human contact than a brief handshake. The mere suggestion of an embrace felt intoxicating. He had intended only to speak with the gentleman, but now that he stood so very near, and with no one else around…

As Lindsey glanced over the room once more in his search for Carlisle, his gaze halted as if compelled. He hadn’t found Carlisle—but what he did find quite drove the thought of Carlisle from his head.

In the corner by the door stood an angel.

His skin had the soft translucency of palest marble, as if he’d sprung fully formed from beneath Bernini’s chisel, or been breathed into life by the sculptor’s kiss. His dark frock coat, of some fifty or sixty year’s vintage, accentuated the bone-china shade of his flesh, as did his hair, black as rain from a thundercloud, sweeping down across his high brow as if slashed by a painter’s brush. Sharp features filled his heart-shaped face, with lips like Cupid’s bow, and cheekbones that could carve out a man’s heart. His eyes, large and dark, flitted about the room, their heavy lids granting every glance a compelling sensuality. The full eyebrows contracted into an expression of furtive concentration, alert and intelligent, such as a master of chess might wear when considering how best to eviscerate his opponent. He stood considerably shorter than all the other men in the room, with such a delicacy of features that outshone every lady present.

Then the dark eyes met Lindsey’s own, and with a shocked gasp—the first breath he’d taken since he’d spied the enchanting stranger—Lindsey realized he’d been staring.

Autism Representation (Accidental and Deliberate)

(This post inspired by a recent AMA on the MM_RomanceBooks subreddit.)

Mr Warren’s Profession is my first novel.

Perhaps because I felt insecure and thought I had something to prove, I was determined to depict two allistic protagonists. Then I handed it off to an allistic friend for a beta read, who said, “Wow! It’s so cool how you’re doing autistic representation by having two autistic characters in a romance together!”

Which told me I was even worse at masking than I’d thought.
