“I realize you may find it awkward to rescind the invitation now,” said Rowena, “but I’m afraid you must. And while you must feel something, of course, I would urge you not to feel too badly about it. It’s not your fault. Really, it is he who has imposed upon you by asking to be invited.”
“He never asked me,” said Lindsey. “I asked him.”
“Lindsey, you do know it is possible for a person to hint in such a way as to ask for something without coming out and asking for it in so many words, don’t you?”
“Of course. You do it all the time.”
