Ch. 25 – A Mirror for the Prince’s Shadow – m x nb romantasy on Patreon

“I’ve told Alistair,” Emlyn announced.

Having remained at the library with Griswold until the librarians all but chased them both out at midnight, Rat was surprised to find Emlyn awaiting him in their dormitory. It felt even more shocking to his system to hear xir speak so frankly of what still felt illicit to him.

“And Quince,” xe added.

Rat realised he’d remained silent for entirely too long. He forced himself to speak. “All well?”

Emlyn beamed. “Of course.”

Rat wished he could believe xir. Or rather, that he could believe Mordaunt. For while doubtless Emlyn believed xe spoke true, Rat doubted Mordaunt had been entirely honest when giving their newfound bliss his blessing. Then again, Rat supposed, perhaps he had misjudged Mordaunt, and he was as capable of making himself happy on xir behalf as Rat. As for what Quince made of it all, Rat could hardly guess either way. Though if he were granting Mordaunt the benefit of doubt, he thought it would be boorish not to offer Quince the same grace, even if only in his own mind.

Belatedly, Rat remembered to mirror Emlyn’s smile.

“Do you truly believe it’s mere chance that Graves so happened to recommend you see the play written by his dear friend Oscar?”

“Oscar is a wonderful playwright,” Lindsey protested. “Lady Windermere’s Fan was quite amusing. And besides, he gave the toast at my birthday.”

Too late, he recalled Carlisle hadn’t received an invitation to that particular soiree.

Lindsey lay in his own bed in his own bedroom. But it was not morning and he was not at the hunting lodge. This was his townhouse bedroom. Which meant, somehow, he had fallen asleep in the countryside and woken up in the City.

Also, for some reason, Aubrey was here.

The woman, apparently called Rowena, stared at him. “Looking for you.”

“Oh,” said Lindsey. “Well, you’ve found me, so you can go back to the country house and tell Mother all about it. Go on!” he added, encouragingly.

She did not seem inclined to take such encouragement. Her gaze slid over to Aubrey. “Who is this?”

“This,” Lindsey declared with evident pride before Aubrey could apologize or introduce himself, “is Mr Aubrey Warren!”

Stunned silence greeted this announcement.

Aubrey cleared his throat. “Pleasure to make your acquaintance, my lady.”

“Charmed,” she replied, as automatic as a self-regulating pump.

“Well,” his mother continued after a short pause. “If he keeps a Wardian case, then he is no doubt familiar with the care and keeping of ferns—and ferns, I think, will do nicely. They thrive in the shade, and the glass protects them from the worst of the smog. Ferns in general indicate fascination and sincerity—which I do believe you feel—and in particular… Maidenhair,” she concluded with satisfaction. “Yes, maidenhair is perfect.”

“A maidenhair fern?” said Lindsey.

“It stands for discretion,” his mother elaborated with a knowing glance before returning her attention to the field.
