Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold – Ch. 14 up on Patreon!

Scene 14 of Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold is up on Patre♡n! Wherein Aubrey, unaware of Lindsey’s fate, goes to meet him for a coffeehouse date.

~

Artists comprised most of the Keyhole Coffeehouse’s patronage, and as Halloway himself proved by lived example, artists mixed with all classes of society. Thus, Aubrey’s own threadbare wardrobe inspired not the suspicious glares of the wealthy who suspected a pauper had invaded their elite establishment, but the indifferent glance of the demi-monde assuming Aubrey, like so many others before him, had adopted the dress of the impoverished in an effort to make some manner of statement.

Queer Audiobook Seeking Narrator!

The hour has arrived to turn Oak King Holly King into an audiobook – and I need YOUR help to find its voice!

Oak King Holly King is a gay Victorian fantasy romance between a fae warrior and a mortal clerk. It has high heat and high adventure to the tune of 150k words.

Ever since its release, readers have demanded an audiobook version. To that end I’m now seeking…

  • male narrator
  • well-hydrated
  • capable of British accents beyond RP (Northern accents particularly sought!)

This is a PAID gig! Standard industry rates to be crowdfunded through preorders on Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign is planned for January or February of 2024. If possible I’d like to have the audiobook itself ready for release by June 21st 2024. Regardless of whether the Kickstarter campaign succeeds or fails, you will be paid in full up front to record narration for the Kickstarter video (explaining the project, why it needs funding, etc.) and the first chapter of the book to use as a sample for the Kickstarter page. If the Kickstarter campaign fails, the audiobook will not go into production.

Auditions are open now through November 30th.

Please email nothwellsebastian@gmail dot com for the audition script.

And as always, thank you for reading!

Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold – Ch. 13 up on Patreon!

Scene 13 of Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold is up on Patre♡n! Wherein Lindsey suffers a riding accident.

~

Lindsey wrenched his boots from the stirrups as he tumbled out of the saddle. His left foot caught. In an instant, he envisioned himself trampled by his steed, his corpse dragged through the woods by galloping Bellerophon. Then, with a sharp twist, he pulled free and fell.

Eighteen hands high at the withers. A considerable height, taller than Lindsey himself, and furthered by Bellerophon’s mighty leap.

His left side struck the ground. His forearm gave a sickening crunch beneath him as he rolled. A sudden blow halted him, knocking the wind out of him with a crack like a gunshot. Flies clustered in his vision. Stabbing pain came from all quarters.

Bellerophon’s hoofbeats echoed off into the forest.

Squinting, Lindsey glimpsed a confused kaleidoscope of sparkling green. Then a knife in his side forced his eyes shut.

Scene 10 of Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold is up on my Patre♡n! Wherein we have our first glimpse of Lindsey’s mother, who in this universe is alive.

“Well,” his mother continued after a short pause. “If he keeps a Wardian case, then he is no doubt familiar with the care and keeping of ferns—and ferns, I think, will do nicely. They thrive in the shade, and the glass protects them from the worst of the smog. Ferns in general indicate fascination and sincerity—which I do believe you feel—and in particular… Maidenhair,” she concluded with satisfaction. “Yes, maidenhair is perfect.”

“A maidenhair fern?” said Lindsey.

“It stands for discretion,” his mother elaborated with a knowing glance before returning her attention to the field.

If Halloway intended to blackmail him, he had miscalculated, for Aubrey had put nothing incriminating into his reply to the prince’s invitation. Indeed, Aubrey had composed what was quite possibly the blandest note ever written by human hands. He had nothing to blush at, much less worry about.

Of course, that had never stopped him from worrying before.

Scene 8 of Solar Fantasy – Aubrey & Lindsey Retold is up on my Patre♡n! Wherein Lindsey acquires certain property and longs for his mysterious gentleman. Please enjoy this sneak peek and join me for more.

~

With an enthusiasm that bordered on breathless, Lindsey launched into a description of the mysterious gentleman he’d met that evening; the dark and haunting eyes, the features sharp and fine, the splendid rosebud colour of the bow-shaped lips, the intrigue of his conversation, of the mechanical brilliance that whirred beneath his ivory brow, and—well, Lindsey abbreviated much of what occurred towards the end of their singular encounter, though he gave enough detail for Carlisle to understand a liaison of some sort had taken place, one which Lindsey very much hoped to repeat. Carlisle’s eyebrows rose as he understood the allusion, but he made no objection, moral or otherwise. Lindsey supposed the revelation came as no surprise to him. Their constant companionship throughout their adolescence and beyond had no doubt given Carlisle much more insight into Lindsey’s character than Lindsey himself understood.

“And Graves still has not found him?” Carlisle asked, bemused, as Lindsey finished his tale.

“Not yet,” said Lindsey.

“I wish I could have attended,” said Carlisle. “I’d be more help to you if I’d seen the man myself.”

“Doubtless you had more pressing concerns,” said Lindsey, and meant it. Carlisle had inherited a great number of business investments from his late father, and had acquired several more since attaining his majority. The coal mines in particular had proved troublesome of late. Carlisle visited them often. Lindsey could hardly hold his strong work ethic against him.

“Not so pressing as to prevent me from celebrating with you,” said Carlisle, “had I been invited.”

Lindsey’s happy musings came to a sudden halt. “Not invited?”

“No,” said Carlisle. His tone remained easy, if a tad wistful. “Perhaps Lord Graves thought I wouldn’t fit in with his crowd. Or perhaps I do him an ill turn, and my invitation was merely lost in the mail.”

Lindsey, too aghast to speak, failed to reassure his friend as he knew he deserved.

“As to your mysterious engineer,” Carlisle said before Lindsey could begin to express his outrage, “even if you should fail to find him again, I would encourage you not to lose heart. I’m certain you may discover many such admirers, each more beautiful than the last. I’d be only too happy to assist you in that matter.”

Lindsey demurred. He did not think there were many men in the world quite like his engineer—though doubtless Carlisle would understand that as soon as Lindsey could introduce them to each other. First, however, he must find him.

FIORENZO – Out Now! + Exclusive Excerpt

FIORENZO is a queer fantasy-of-manners romance featuring secret identities, hurt/comfort, and a happily-ever-after – and it’s out TODAY!

To celebrate, please enjoy this exclusive excerpt below.

~

The tailor’s preliminary sketches had not done the final suit justice.

With just a week to go before the ball, the whole ensemble was assembled at last. A vision in seafoam green head to foot, a match which Fiore well knew was no small feat. Hard enough to mix the same color twice, much less make it bind the same to two textiles of divers materials. Yet one would be hard-pressed to find the hair’s-breadth of difference between the cool-handed wool coat and the gleaming satin breeches and waistcoat. More remarkable still was how the leather of both the hat and shoes came to hold the same soft lagoon-green shade. The skillfully-applied gilding of the hat’s trim and the shoes’ heels likewise matched the gold filigree edging the hems of the wool coat. The leather itself was so smooth as to appear molded of porcelain, sleek to the touch on the outside and suede smooth as butter within.

All together, they looked, in a word…

“Perfect,” Fiore declared.

A soft sigh cut through the stark silence of the tailor’s parlor. Fiore tore his gaze away from the masterpiece to regard the cluster of men who’d held their collective breath whilst awaiting his opinion. Several assistants and twice as many apprentices had gathered behind the master tailor himself, who stood beside Enzo with his hands clasped behind his back. What Enzo thought of Fiore’s new ensemble remained hidden beneath his bauta mask—for the moment, at least.

The master tailor retained more poise than his assistants or apprentices. He smiled and gestured to the folding screen in the back corner of the parlor. “If you’d care to try it on, signore…?”

Fiore very much desired to do so, indeed. He’d had regular fittings as the tailor’s work had progressed. But never before had he held the whole ensemble complete in his grasp. The work of a moment saw it all folded up in his arms and secreted away with him behind the folding screen. Then he turned his focus to divesting himself of his everyday garments.

No sooner had he untied his scarlet sash, however, than he heard the master tailor’s voice again from the other side of the screen.

“If you require assistance, signore, my apprentices would be happy to guide you.”

Fiore paused with his sash suspended between his hands. The master tailor’s tone had retained its well-practiced deference throughout the offer. And yet it rang in Fiore’s ears with a timbre that seemed determined to strike his pride. While he had some hesitance about handling finery, he thought he’d hidden it from his audience; the conservatorio had trained him well for that, if nothing else. Furthermore, even if he hadn’t already undergone several fittings in this very shop prior to this moment, the plain shape of the garments—shirt, waistcoat, breeches, stockings—were precisely like his own everyday garb. He obviously knew how to dress himself.

Which gave the tailor’s offer a distinct undercurrent of something Fiore didn’t like.

Regardless if the tailor proved sincere or false, Fiore’s answer remained the same. He didn’t bother to disguise his self-satisfied smile as he poked his head out from behind the screen. The master tailor and all his assistants and apprentices watched him with bated breath. But Fiore had eyes for Enzo alone.

“Would you mind helping me?” Fiore asked when his gaze locked with Enzo’s beneath the mask.

The collective surprise of the tailor’s apprentices sang in Fiore’s blood like wine. The assistants kept their poise a little better. The master tailor, if he realized his mis-step at all, showed not a hint of it in his face.

And as for Enzo himself, he simply perked up and strode to join Fiore behind the screen.

The duke’s consent to act as valet to a mere courtesan did not go unnoticed in the shop. Fiore drank in as much of his audience’s astonishment as he could—guzzled it, really—before he withdrew with Enzo.

Book Review – Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner

Did you enjoy Jane Austen or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell but wished for more murderhusbands?

Do you think any book could be improved with swords?

Do you prefer your characters queer until proven otherwise?

Some have called Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner a “cult classic,” which is a fun way to say a book is criminally underappreciated. It’s a perfect blend of fantasy, intrigue, romance, and edge-of-your-seat action. This forerunner of the mannerpunk (or fantasy-of-manners) subgenre is a marvelous balance of Austenesque social ritual with bloody consequences. A wealth of worldbuilding-through-implication is packed into this shockingly slender volume that leaves the reader ravenous for more.

While it contains far more grit and gore than your average romance, it is still at its core a romance, and a queer one at that – almost every twist of the ever-coiling plot is a direct result of romantic desire either thwarted or indulged. Our heroes, the low-born master swordsman Richard St. Vier and his mysterious academic lover Alec, form the core of this Gordian knot. Though I prefer a Happily-Ever-After over a Happy-For-Now, I concede that Swordspoint‘s conclusion puts the punk in mannerpunk and thus feels wholly appropriate for this one-of-a-kind story.

tl;dr – read Swordspoint and come scream with me, pls.
